What is metal recycling?
Metal recycling is the process of reusing old metal material, mainly ferrous and non-ferrous, to make new products. Recycling old metal products uses 95% less energy than manufacturing it from new materials.
Recycling is an excellent way of saving energy, conserving the environment and indeed one of the best ways for you to have a positive impact on the world in which we live.
To understand the value of recycling, we must look at the entire lifecycle of a product ? from the extraction and processing of raw materials, to the manufacture of the product, to its final disposal. Recycling creates a closed-loop system where unwanted products are returned back to manufacturers for use in new products. This prevents the pollution and destruction that occurs when virgin materials �like trees and precious metals� are extracted from the earth.
What to recycle?
Virtually all metals can be recycled into high quality new metal. Using secondary raw materials means less use of natural resources which would otherwise be needed to make new metal compounds � such as iron ore in steelmaking; nickel in stainless steel; or alumina and bauxite in aluminium smelting. How to recycle?
Recycling scrap metal includes ferrous metals (iron and steel) and nonferrous materials (aluminium, copper, tin, brass, lead, zinc, nickel). Many of our home appliances are made of metals. This includes our washers & dryers, refrigerators, ovens & stoves and water heaters. Waste from unwanted appliances can be categorized in two main types: refrigerants (Freon) and non-refrigerants. One means of ensuring that the items which are not useable get returned to the resources pool and are cleaned and reused. Recycling helps to conserve raw materials and often helps to save on additional energy that is required for manufacturing, using standard raw materials. Recycling also reduces the amount of material going into landfills, which is a big bonus. Many countries are fast running out of space for landfill. Recycling can also lessen pollution involved in waste disposal and reducing the consumption of raw materials helps to conserve our natural resources.
